Top 6 Holiday Photo Spots in Washington DC

There is no denying that the holiday season is a magical time of the year. The decorations, holiday spirit and celebrations make the December period beautiful and jolly. In my opinion, Washington DC has some of the best Christmas and holiday decorations in the entire United States. I’m going to explore some of the best holiday photo spots in DC that both photography lovers and Instagram photo spot hunters alike can explore.

Spot 1: Georgetown

Georgetown is by far one of the most stunning areas in DC. Whether summer, fall, winter or spring, the atmosphere of Georgetown is magical and provides a glorious way to spend the day. The displays in the ornate shops of Georgetown change each year, but you’re sure to find some holiday season favorites presented in shop windows. I suggest taking half a day (mornings are best as they’re less busy) to stroll around and scout out the best seasonal displays.  During the late winter months, the gardens of Dumbarton Oaks located in Georgetown displays stunning Cherry blossom trees, perfect for some beautiful photos..

Spot 2: US Capitol Christmas Tree

Beautifully displayed in front of the White House is the US Capitol Christmas Tree! Grab some dazzling shots with the tree in the foreground and the White House in the background, tucked in the right or left-hand corner of your photo frame.

Tip: This location gets extremely busy, so if you want to get the perfect shot, I recommend visiting either first thing in the morning or later at night.

Spot 3: Union Station

The simple yet classic look of Union Station at Christmas is not one to be missed. With classical decorations and the awe of Christmas travel, you’ll be feeling full of joy and nostalgia while shooting a seasonal shoot and Union Station

Spot 4: City Centre DC

Enchant yourself with the Christmas spirit and grab some last-minute gifts from downtown DC. With the beautiful decoration from the abundance of luxury shops to some of the world’s finest dining options, you’ll be spoiled with choices for choice, all the while being enamoured by the gorgeous and oversized seasonal displays perfect for those Christmas pics.

This is another location which draws very large crowds. Visit early on in the day when the shops first open, or if you’re just there for photos, sunrise may be the quietest time to visit.

Spot 5: The Willard InterContinental Hotel

You can’t beat the decorations at The Willard InterContinental Hotel for glamorous photos with a classic charm. From tasteful exterior architecture and decoration to the exquisite interior with the famous grand tree, photo opportunities at The Willard InterContinental Hotel are endless.

Tip: The Willard InterContinental Hotel also offers an extremely popular afternoon tea during December.

Spot 6: Old Town Alexandria

In Alexandria, Virginia, you can find a truly dazzling holiday experience. This picturesque part of the city is home to beautiful trees and lights along King Street, charming door décor, and festive signature events that will make your holiday season merry and bright!

Other Notable Spots

Arlington National Cemetery

Arlington National Cemetery is open daily. They have a volunteer program with Wreaths Across America, where thousands of volunteers place wreaths on the 40,000+ headstones in the cemetery ranging from notable American civil servants like President John F. Kennedy, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, senators, representatives, to service members killed in action from most, if not all, US wars. Often their wives are placed next to them or on the back of their headstones. I was able to volunteer this year for the first time, and it was quite impactful. ANC is a really special place to visit, especially during the holidays.

Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center

The Gaylord has many holiday events, but the light show is free and accessible and goes off three times a night during the holiday season. They have a village built inside the hotel lobby with some cute shops, stalls and festive decor.

This concludes my list of top DC Christmas photo spots. If you have any to add, I’d love to hear from you! And if you’re looking to get in the festive spirit with a personal or family photoshoot, don’t hesitate to contact me today.
