Author of Those Who Told The Story

Photojournalism & Documentary Photography

Rachel is a trained photojournalist, documenting news unfolding in her backyard of Capitol Hill and previous home at Michigan State University. She is the author of a newly published book about the community of journalists who documented the USA Gymnastics and Michigan State sex abuse scandal.

Those Who Told The Story: Journalism, Trauma, and the Act of Witnessing a Sex Abuse Scandal  is a story about second-hand trauma which manifests in unique and variable ways based on location, age, and life circumstances. These stories unite in this project to start a conversation about the act of witnessing and covering traumatic stories specifically related to sexual abuse against children and how it affects journalists personally and professionally.

Through the use of portraiture and still-life imagery, readers will experience, in variable ways, the impact of these stories on journalists.

Outside of professional documentary work, Rachel continues to document her own life in transition with her Sony camera and film cameras from her great grandfather and grandmother.

About Rachel Hitchcock

Hi! I'm Rachel Hitchcock, a photographer and visual journalist based in Washington DC, and the owner of Hitchcock Creative LLC. I am creative by nature, a photographer by trade, and a visual storyteller at heart.

My grandmother, Joanne, was a photographer. Having spent years of my life in front of her camera, one day, I was inspired to get behind it.

My photographic style takes an outsider, insider approach seeking to document the world and people around me with open-mindedness, genuine interest, and respect. My work examines the complexities of personal identities and relationships to one another and the spaces we occupy. I seek to connect with those I photograph and teach, empowering people to practice documentary photography in their own lives.

I'm always excited to work with new clients, and on new projects. If you have an idea you'd like to share with me, even if it looks outside the scope of my work, send me a message and we'll get in touch! I'm always open to trying something new and expanding my knowledge of all things creative.

Outside of photography, I'm interested in immersive storytelling in the VR space and am currently working on a team developing a travel and exploration Virtual Reality app. I'm interested In all visual media and art forms. I'm a lover of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I enjoy gardening, running, watching tv, and spending time surrounded by nature and the wonders of this world.

I'm currently watching Masters of the Air and reading two books – The Woman Destroyed by Simone de Beauvoir and The Exvangelicals by Sarah McCammon. I'd love to hear your book, tv, movie, or music suggestions!

I have a bachelor's and master's degree in journalism from Michigan State University with minors in media photography, peace and justice studies, and women's and gender studies. This knowledge and practice of photojournalism and documentary photography continues to guide my work.
